Development and training

Large-scale gold-mining is a relatively new industry in Tanzania.

We are therefore developing our employees’ skills through on-the-job training, and by working with universities to produce a new wave of Tanzanian mining professionals. As we expand our business operations, we believe it is more important than ever to develop our employee and potential employee base.

Maximising potential

We want to see our employees reach their full potential, so we constantly seek to:

  • improve the workplace environment
  • provide support tools and training for personal development
  • provide opportunities for professional development and career advancement
  • provide opportunities for assignments within the Barrick Group.

Graduates

Our two-year Compass Graduate Development Programme attracts high-achieving graduates from universities in Tanzania. The programme blends technical and leadership study with hands-on work experience, presentation and communication skills, field-level risk assessment and incident investigation.

Leaders, managers and engineers

The Management Development Programme and Intermediate Management Development Programme, run by the University of Cape Town, equip managers with essential business knowledge, basic management and leadership skills. We also offer a Supervisory Leadership Development Programme, to help develop high-potential employees as part of our talent management focus, and a Graduate Diploma in Engineering to cater for the needs of our senior engineers.

Study assistance worldwide

More than 100 employees are benefiting from ABG’s support to continue learning. In fact, we have awarded some £130,000 so employees can pursue full-time, part-time or online studies in universities across the world.

Learning for all

Our support is not confined to our employees. We support educational programmes, such as the Integrated Mining Technical Training (IMTT) programme run by the Tanzanian Chamber of Minerals & Energy and the Tanzanian Government, which aim to improve local employment prospects and build technical knowledge and capacity across the Tanzanian mining industry.

We also offer a variety of starter-programmes to help Tanzanian citizens build careers within the mining industry, with the opportunity of practical experience and sponsorships for training.

Hundreds of students have benefited, and indeed found real success. Two of our scholars recently completed their Masters in Metallurgy and Mining Engineering from the Laurentian University in Canada and are now assistant lecturers at the University of Dar es Salaam.
