We actively monitor emissions, effluents and wastes generated by our operations with the aim of improving our performance at every site.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
We aim to lead by example in addressing the critical issue of climate change. Every site has an active programme to improve energy efficiencies and identify alternative technologies. We also consider the management of climate-related risks throughout the mine lifecycle.
Waste
Every industrial process produces waste. Ours takes the form of dust, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, waste rock and tailings (the finely ground material that remains after crushed and slurried ore passes through the process).
Our tailings’ storage facilities are risk-assessed and independently audited on a regular basis. They are also tested annually for physical and chemical stability.
Tailings can also be redeployed as useful ‘paste’. At Bulyanhulu, up to 50,000 tonnes of paste is back-filled underground each month to fill the mined-out voids. This also removes the need for storage above ground.
